Concept

triple point

The triple point of a substance is the specific temperature and pressure at which its three phases—solid, liquid, and gas—can coexist in thermodynamic equilibrium. For carbon dioxide, the triple point occurs at 5.1 atmospheres and -56.4 degrees Celsius, a condition rarely met naturally on Earth's surface, which is why dry ice sublimes directly into gas.
