The 1999 paper by Justin Kruger and David Dunning in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, formally titled "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments." It reported the percentile-misjudgment pattern in logic, grammar, and humor tasks that became known, against the authors' own preference, as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
