Vemork

The Vemork hydroelectric plant, located near Rjukan in Norway, was the first site in the world to mass-produce heavy water as a byproduct of fertilizer manufacturing. During the Second World War, its production became a focal point of the race for nuclear energy. The plant was the site of several daring Allied sabotage missions intended to prevent Nazi Germany from acquiring the heavy water necessary for their planned nuclear reactor experiments.
