Person

Vladimir Dzhanibekov

A Soviet cosmonaut and two-time Hero of the Soviet Union who flew five missions to the Salyut and Mir space stations. In 1985, during the daring rescue of the dead Salyut 7 station, he observed the anomalous rotational flipping of a wing nut in microgravity. This observation, though based on centuries-old physics, became widely known as the Dzhanibekov Effect after video of the phenomenon was declassified.
