Volcanic Explosivity Index

A relative scale devised by Chris Newhall and Stephen Self in 1982 to measure the explosiveness of volcanic eruptions. The index ranges from 0 to 8, with each step representing a tenfold increase in the volume of ejected material. VEI 7 eruptions, such as Tambora, occur roughly once every thousand years.
