Concept

Whispering-gallery mode

A specific resonance occurring when a wave is trapped within a circular or near-circular cavity by continuous total internal reflection or grazing incidence. The wave clings to the boundary, circling the perimeter and interfering with itself to create a stable, high-energy state. While originally discovered in acoustics, these modes are now critical in photonics for creating ultra-high-precision filters, lasers, and biological sensors.
