American nuclear physicist (1911–1995) at Caltech. Built the experimental programme that confirmed Hoyle's prediction of the carbon-12 resonance in 1957, and went on to map most of the reaction network by which stars synthesise the elements heavier than helium. Shared the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics with Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar for that body of work on stellar nucleosynthesis.
