Woolwich Arsenal

A grand courtyard with arched buildings and a clock tower under a dramatic sky, capturing the historic essence of the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich.

The Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, on the south bank of the Thames east of London, was Britain's central armaments works from the late seventeenth century until 1967. At its peak it employed over eighty thousand people across foundries, laboratories, proof yards and powder mills. Young Henry Maudslay started there at twelve, filling powder cartridges, before being promoted into the carpenters' shop and then the smithy.
