zenith sector

A large precision astronomical instrument used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to measure the position of stars passing directly overhead. By observing stars at the zenith, astronomers could minimise the distorting effects of atmospheric refraction. Maskelyne employed a ten-foot zenith sector on Schiehallion to detect the tiny gravitational deflection caused by the mountain's mass.
