A 2000-year-old computer. Found in a shipwreck. And it took us 1400 years to catch up. In 1901, Greek sponge divers discovered something extraordinary in an ancient Roman shipwreck. At first, it looked like a corroded lump of bronze, roughly the size of a shoebox. Scientists dismissed it as junk. For seventy years, it sat in a museum drawer, forgotten. Then in the 1970s, X-ray imaging revealed something impossible: thirty precision-cut bronze gears, interlocking with mathematical perfection. This was the Antikythera Mechanism—a mechanical computer built around 100 BCE. It could predict solar eclipses decades in advance. Track the movements of the five known planets. Calculate the phases of the moon. Even tell you when the next Olympic Games would occur. The craftsmanship was so sophisticated that similar gear complexity didn't appear again until medieval clockmakers in the 14th century. Think about that.
