Soviet physicist (1921–1989), co-inventor of the tokamak and lead designer of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, who later became the country's most prominent dissident and won the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize. His early work with Tamm on magnetically confined fusion plasmas was declassified in the late 1950s and exported, becoming the foundation of every major fusion programme since.
