Italian luthier, born around 1644 in or near Cremona and died there in 1737. Apprenticed in the workshop of Nicolò Amati and went on to define the modern violin: longer, flatter, with a stronger projection than his teacher's instruments. His mature period, roughly 1700 to 1725, produced the violins now considered unsurpassable. He also made violas, cellos, guitars, and at least one harp.
