Apache Point Observatory

A person walks towards the entrance of the Apache Point Observatory, a large dome structure with a circular base, set against a backdrop of mountains under a twilight sky.

Astronomical observatory in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico, at 2,800 metres elevation. Its 3.5-metre telescope hosts APOLLO — the Apache Point Observatory Lunar Laser-ranging Operation — which since 2005 has been the most precise lunar ranging station in operation, capable of millimetre-scale distance measurements by timing individual returning photons against an atomic clock.
