Arecibo Observatory

The Arecibo Observatory was a massive radio telescope in Puerto Rico, featuring a 305-metre spherical reflector built into a natural sinkhole. Until 2016, it was the largest single-aperture telescope in the world. It played a critical role in radio astronomy, planetary science, and SETI, including the transmission of the 1974 Arecibo message into deep space.
