Concept

ATP

A molecular model of ATP with the letters "ATP" prominently displayed in the center, set against a gradient blue background.

Adenosine triphosphate, the molecule cells use to move energy around. Breaking off one of its three phosphate groups releases roughly thirty kilojoules per mole, enough to drive most of the work a cell does, including running ion pumps. An adult human turns over about their own body weight in ATP every day, recycling it from ADP rather than holding any stockpile.
