Concept

Autism spectrum

A colorful brain with puzzle pieces symbolizes autism spectrum conditions, highlighting diversity and complexity in neurological development.

Umbrella term, formalised in the DSM-5 in 2013, for a range of neurodevelopmental conditions characterised by differences in social communication and sensory processing. Within McGurk research, autistic children and adults reliably show a weaker integration of mouth and voice than neurotypical controls — a finding sometimes used as evidence that multisensory binding develops along an atypical trajectory.
