Concept

Auxin

A plant with a central stem and leafy top, supported by intricate root-like structures, symbolizes the concept of auxin, a hormone controlling growth and development in plants.

A class of plant hormones, of which indole-3-acetic acid is the principal natural example, that controls cell elongation, root initiation, apical dominance, and tropic bending. Auxin is synthesised at shoot tips and transported in a polar, cell-to-cell fashion downward through the plant, accumulating preferentially on the shaded or lower side of an organ to drive directional growth. It was first isolated in the 1930s.
