Axiom of Choice

The image features the title "AXIOM of Choice" with abstract geometric lines and bokeh light effects in the background, symbolizing the concept of selecting elements from an infinite collection of sets.

A foundational principle of set theory, formulated by Ernst Zermelo in 1904: from any collection of non-empty sets, one can select a single element from each, even if the collection is infinite and no selection rule is given. Independent of the other standard axioms of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory, it underlies vast tracts of modern mathematics and produces the Banach-Tarski paradox as the price of admission.
