Concept

Beryllium

A circular, metallic object with a geometric, octagonal outer frame and a smooth, reflective interior, set against a gradient background.

A rare, lightweight alkaline earth metal prized in aerospace engineering for its high stiffness-to-weight ratio and dimensional stability over wide temperature ranges. Because it retains its shape at cryogenic temperatures, it is the material of choice for space-based infrared telescope mirrors.
