Betelgeuse

A glowing red sphere, Betelgeuse, a supergiant star in the constellation Orion, stands out against the dark expanse of space.

A red supergiant in the constellation Orion, roughly 550 light years from Earth, with a surface temperature near 3600 kelvin and a radius that would swallow Jupiter's orbit if placed at the Sun. Its low temperature gives it a distinctly orange-red colour to the naked eye. A dramatic dimming episode in 2019 and 2020 prompted speculation that it might be approaching supernova; it recovered.
