Bhushan Karihaloo

A man with short dark hair and glasses wears a maroon button-up shirt against a dark background.

British-Indian engineer at Cardiff University, working on the mechanics of materials. In 2013 he and colleagues published high-resolution observations of fresh honeycomb showing that bees lay down cylindrical cells which then flow into hexagons under the influence of body heat and surface tension. The result reframed the honeycomb not as a built object but as a self-assembled one, finished by physics rather than by the bee.
