Buzz Aldrin

Buzz Aldrin, an American astronaut wearing a white space suit with a red and black helmet, stands against a dark background.

American astronaut, second human to walk on the Moon, in the Sea of Tranquility on 21 July 1969. A West Point graduate with a doctorate from MIT in orbital mechanics, his thesis on manned orbital rendezvous shaped how Apollo crews actually flew. Before stepping back into the lunar module he set up the laser ranging retroreflector and the seismometer — the only Apollo experiment package still returning data.
