Concept

calcinated

An archaic term in chemistry referring to the process of heating a substance to a high temperature, but below its melting point, usually in the presence of air. This process typically removes volatile substances or causes oxidation, transforming the material into a powdery residue known as a 'calx.' In phlogiston theory, calcination was thought to be the release of phlogiston from metals.
