Carl Zeiss Foundation

A grand, historic building with ornate architecture houses the Carl Zeiss Foundation, featuring arched entryways and detailed stonework under a clear sky.

Charitable trust established by Ernst Abbe in 1889 to own the Carl Zeiss optical works and the associated Schott glassworks. Its 1896 statutes pioneered the eight-hour workday, formal pensions, profit-sharing, and a capped ratio between highest and lowest pay. The foundation still owns Zeiss AG and Schott AG today, making it one of the longest-running examples of stakeholder-owned industrial capitalism.
