American developmental biologist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. As lead author of the 2015 Nature paper sequencing the first octopus genome, she showed that Octopus bimaculoides carries roughly 33,000 protein-coding genes and a striking expansion of the protocadherin family used to wire complex nervous systems, features previously thought to be a vertebrate specialty.
