Castle Bromwich Aircraft Factory

A propeller-driven aircraft takes off from a runway flanked by industrial structures at the Castle Bromwich Aircraft Factory, bathed in the warm glow of sunset.

A vast shadow factory east of Birmingham, built in 1938 and run from 1940 by Vickers-Armstrongs. Between 1940 and 1945 it produced more than twelve thousand Spitfires and three hundred Lancasters — the largest single source of Spitfires in the war. Its workforce was overwhelmingly female by the middle years of the conflict. The site is today a Jaguar Land Rover assembly plant.
