Chandragupta II

A portrait of Chandragupta II, a Gupta emperor wearing ornate golden armor and a crown, with a red bindi on his forehead and a red garment draped over his shoulder.

Gupta emperor who ruled northern India roughly 375–415 CE, presiding over the dynasty's territorial and cultural peak. His court at Ujjain housed the poet Kalidasa and patronised the astronomers whose work fed into the Surya Siddhanta. The Delhi Iron Pillar's Sanskrit inscription is widely read as commemorating his victories, which dates the casting to around the turn of the fifth century.
