Person

Claus Jönsson

Claus Jönsson, wearing glasses and a dark suit over a brown turtleneck, is depicted in a professional portrait.

German physicist who, as a doctoral student at Tübingen in 1961, performed the first true double-slit experiment with electrons rather than light. He etched slits half a micrometre wide into copper foil using a process he developed himself, and demonstrated interference fringes from a coherent electron beam. A Physics World poll in 2002 named the experiment the most beautiful in physics.
