Cloudesley Shovell

A portrait depicts a man with long, curly gray hair wearing a dark military uniform adorned with gold epaulets and a blue sash, symbolizing his rank and achievements as an English admiral during the 18th century.

English admiral (1650–1707) who rose from cabin boy to commander of the Mediterranean fleet under Queen Anne. He died in the Scilly naval disaster of October 1707, when four of his ships ran onto the rocks at night because their navigators had miscalculated their longitude. His body washed ashore on St Mary's; the story that a local woman finished him off for his ring was repeated by his own chaplain.
