A grand stone temple with a red flag atop its dome stands majestically against a backdrop of rugged mountains under a clear blue sky.

The Temple of the Sun at the heart of Cusco, the most sacred building of the Inca state. Its walls were of finely jointed ashlar masonry and were, according to early Spanish witnesses, sheathed in plates of gold. After the conquest the Dominicans demolished the upper temple and built the church of Santo Domingo on its base. The Inca courses below have outlasted every subsequent earthquake.
