Cremona

A cobblestone street in Cremona, a Lombard town on the Po River, lined with historic buildings and a clock tower in the distance.

Lombard town on the Po river, about eighty kilometres south-east of Milan, that produced the three great violin-making dynasties of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the Amati, the Guarneri, and the Stradivari. The trade collapsed within a generation of Stradivari's death and the town remained a backwater until twentieth-century scholarship turned it into a place of pilgrimage for luthiers.
