Essenes

An ascetic Jewish sect active from the second century BCE to the first century CE. Characterised by communal living, strict adherence to ritual purity, and an apocalyptic worldview, they are widely believed by scholars to be the authors and keepers of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The group famously withdrew from mainstream society to the Qumran settlement to prepare for a perceived imminent cosmic battle.
