Forward slip

A propeller-driven aircraft is shown in a forward slip maneuver, with its nose angled away from the direction of travel, presenting a broadside view to the airflow.

A flight manoeuvre in which the pilot deflects the rudder one way and the ailerons the other, holding the aircraft's nose off the line of travel. The fuselage presents itself broadside to the airflow, generating large amounts of drag without much increase in airspeed. It is a standard tool for glider pilots needing to lose altitude over a short distance; it is almost unheard of in passenger jets.
