Archduke Franz Ferdinand

A man in an ornate military uniform adorned with medals and decorations stands against a dark background.

Heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne from 1896, a politically awkward figure whose plans for federalising the empire — granting South Slavs a status comparable to Hungarians — alarmed Magyar elites and Serbian nationalists in roughly equal measure. He married Sophie Chotek beneath his rank in 1900; their children were barred from the succession. He was 50 when he was shot in Sarajevo on his fourteenth wedding anniversary.
