Gavrilo Princip's Sandwich

He failed the assassination. Then went for a sandwich. The target's car broke down right in front of him.

June 28, 1914. Sarajevo. Gavrilo Princip was one of six assassins positioned along the motorcade route of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The plan failed completely. One assassin threw a grenade—it bounced off the car and exploded under the wrong vehicle. Princip gave up. He walked to Schiller's Delicatessen for a sandwich. He stood there, defeated, eating, when Franz Ferdinand's car made a wrong turn onto that exact street. The driver tried to reverse. The engine stalled. The car stopped directly in front of Gavrilo Princip. He stepped forward. Two shots. The Archduke and his wife died within the hour. One month later, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia mobilized. Germany declared war on Russia. France was pulled in. Then Britain. Then the Ottoman Empire. Then everyone. World War I killed 20 million people. It led directly to World War II, which killed 70 million more. The Soviet Union. The Cold War. The modern Middle East. All because a car stalled in front of a man eating a sandwich. History isn't written by great forces. Sometimes it's written by engine failure.
