Sarajevo

Capital of Bosnia, occupied by Austria-Hungary in 1878 and formally annexed in 1908 over Serbian and Russian protests. By 1914 it was a multi-ethnic provincial city of around 50,000, with a substantial Bosnian Serb population whose political imagination ran toward Belgrade rather than Vienna. The annexation crisis radicalised a generation of young South Slavs, Princip among them, into clandestine politics.
