Concept

Free group

The image depicts a geometric representation of a free group, featuring overlapping circles and connecting lines against a dark background, symbolizing the concept of algebraic structures without imposed relations.

In algebra, a group whose elements are finite sequences in a chosen set of generators and their inverses, with no relations other than cancelling a generator with its inverse. The free group on two generators contains, in a precise sense, two disjoint copies of itself — an algebraic doubling that drives the Banach-Tarski construction once it is realised concretely as a pair of rotations of a sphere.
