Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei, a Tuscan astronomer and physicist, is depicted with a serious expression, wearing a black coat and white cravat, set against a dark background.

Tuscan astronomer and physicist (1564–1642) whose telescopic observations of Jupiter's moons and Venus's phases dismantled the Ptolemaic universe. Tried by the Roman Inquisition in 1633 for advocating heliocentrism and sentenced to house arrest in Arcetri, where he spent his final years writing and corresponding. Torricelli joined him there as an assistant in the autumn of 1641, three months before his death.
