Institution

German Archaeological Institute

A courtyard with classical architecture featuring columns and large windows under a clear blue sky.

Berlin-based research body (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, founded 1829) that funds and runs excavations at sites from Anatolia to Peru. It has held the permit at Göbekli Tepe since 1995, first under Klaus Schmidt and now under Lee Clare, in partnership with Turkish authorities. Its publications carry most of the first-hand technical reporting on the site, including the slow revision of Schmidt's original interpretations.
