Concept

human tail

A human tail with a gradient from dark to light brown, coiled in a spiral shape against a neutral background.

A rare congenital condition in which a newborn retains the embryonic tail that should have been resorbed in the womb. True human tails contain skin, connective tissue, muscle and nerves but no vertebrae; pseudotails may contain bone or cartilage. Around two hundred cases are recorded in the modern medical literature. They are almost always removed surgically in infancy and rarely cause lasting complications.
