Institute for Advanced Study

A grand red-brick building with a central entrance flanked by columns and illuminated by warm lights, set against a cloudy sky, represents the Institute for Advanced Study, an independent research center founded in Princeton in 1930.

Independent research centre founded in Princeton in 1930, modelled on the idea that scholars should have permanent positions and no teaching duties. Its early faculty included Einstein, von Neumann, Hermann Weyl, and from 1940, Kurt Gödel. Gödel and Einstein walked home together most afternoons; Einstein said the walks were his main reason for going to the office.
