James Cook

A portrait depicts a man in 18th-century attire, featuring a dark blue coat with gold buttons and a cream-colored cravat, set against a dark background.

British naval officer (1728–1779) whose three Pacific voyages mapped New Zealand, the eastern coast of Australia, and the Hawaiian archipelago. His second voyage (1772–1775) carried Kendall's K1 chronometer, which Cook praised in his log as "our trusty friend the watch" and "our never failing guide." His charts, fixed by K1, were the first in history to place Pacific islands at their true longitude.
