American mathematician at the University of Maryland who, with his student Tien-Yien Li, published "Period Three Implies Chaos" in 1975 — the paper that gave the field its name. Yorke had read Lorenz's 1963 paper after a colleague handed it to him; he later said the meteorologists had buried one of the great mathematical discoveries of the century in a journal no mathematician was reading.
