Person

Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume

A man dressed in formal attire holds a violin, showcasing a historical connection to the craftsmanship of 19th-century luthiers.

Nineteenth-century Parisian luthier (1798–1875) who bought, restored, copied, and in many cases re-graduated the great Cremonese instruments as they passed through his workshop. Most surviving Stradivariuses were modernised in the 1800s — longer necks, higher bridges, steel strings, heavier bass-bars — to meet the demands of larger concert halls. Vuillaume's hand is on more of them than is comfortable to admit.
