NASA's deep-space research centre in Pasadena, California, operated by Caltech. Founded in 1936 as a rocket-testing outfit on the dry bed of the Arroyo Seco, JPL designed and operates almost every American mission to the outer Solar System, including the Voyagers, Galileo, Cassini, the Mars rovers, and the ongoing Deep Space Network that keeps in touch with all of them.
