Person

Johann Joachim Becher

A German physician, alchemist, and natural philosopher born in 1635. Becher is credited with originating the concept that would later evolve into the phlogiston theory. In his 1667 work 'Physica Subterranea,' he proposed that combustible materials contained a substance he called 'terra pinguis,' a fatty earth, which was released during burning.
