Johnstown Flood

The Johnstown Flood struck western Pennsylvania on 31 May 1889 after the South Fork Dam failed above the Little Conemaugh valley. The released reservoir destroyed much of Johnstown and killed 2,208 people. It became one of the defining American disasters of the industrial age, remembered for its engineering lessons and for the failed legal pursuit of the dam's wealthy owners.
