American theoretical physicist (b. 1940), longtime professor at Caltech and a central figure in twentieth-century gravitational physics. Thorne co-founded the LIGO project with Rainer Weiss and Ronald Drever, supervised the theoretical work behind the detection templates, and consulted on the black-hole visualisations for the film Interstellar. He shared the 2017 Nobel Prize for the GW150914 detection.
