Kyoto Institute of Technology

A modern building at night, featuring illuminated windows and a central courtyard, exemplifies the Kyoto Institute of Technology's architectural design.

A public research university in Kyoto, founded in 1949 from a textile college dating to 1899. Its origins in dyeing and fibre chemistry left it with unusually strong polymer-science laboratories, which is how Shosuke Yoshida's team came to be screening recycling-plant soil for plastic-degrading microbes. Smaller than the more famous Kyoto University across the city, but disproportionately influential in materials research.
