LIGO Livingston Observatory

The LIGO Livingston Observatory's four-kilometer L-shaped vacuum pipes stretch through a serene pine forest at sunset, flanked by tall trees and bathed in golden light.

One of the two original LIGO sites, set in pine forest outside Livingston, Louisiana. The four-kilometre L-shaped vacuum pipes run through cleared corridors of cypress and slash pine. Operated jointly by Caltech and MIT, the observatory began full operations in 2002 and recorded the louder of the two GW150914 signals on 14 September 2015.
